About RP Conversations Paragraphs Journal Relationships

Welcome

I'm Katherine Pryde, but my friends call me Kitty. I'm a freshman computer science major. I'm a lot nicer once you get to know me.

“You’re welcome,” Kitty replied, pleased that she could make him happy. The conversation was going better than expected. She’d barely paid attention to the episode, although it was one she’d seen before.

Turning her attention back to Harvey, she frowned, taking a moment to think. “I’m not sure yet, maybe research? Or working for a tech firm?” she answered hesitantly. “I’ve still got a few years to figure it out, thankfully.”

“Yeah, you do. How old are you, anyway? Eighteen or nineteen?” he asked. She looked even younger than that, but she probably wasn’t.

Realizing the conversation had turned a little boring, he decided to change the subject. “So, do you know a lot of people on campus yet? I know that’s kinda hard, at first.” It wasn’t much better, but it beat sitting in awkward silence.

“I’m eighteen. Almost nineteen, in about a month,” Kitty said honestly. She was willing to be Harvey was older than her by at least a few years, but so what?

“No, I don’t,” she admitted. “That’s kinda why I made my blog - to try and connect with people. I tend to end up spending hours alone in my room coding or playing video games otherwise.” Kitty tried to be more optimistic, “So far it’s worked out okay!”, referring to their meeting. At least Harvey seemed to be equally conversation challenged.

“What about you?” she queried. “You must have a lot of friends. Are you in the Future Lawyers club, or Student Council or anything?”

“That’s really admirable. I’ve never been to Gotham, but I’ve heard stories. I’m from the Midwest, so I’m sort of sheltered,” Kitty admitted. “And why computer science? I guess it was kinda the same thing - minus the making a difference, although it can improve people’s quality of life.”

“Thanks.” he said, grinning sheepishly. “Sure. I bet you’ll do something great with it.” he said, smiling. He glanced over at the television screen, realizing they hadn’t been paying attention to it at all. It was kind of nice, being able to talk to someone so easily. “You have any idea what you wanna do once you graduate?” he asked, determined to keep the conversation going.

Kitty noticed Harvey’s look down. Was it possible that he too felt awkward? She had imagined him being more arrogant, more sure of himself. It was refreshing that he didn’t have it all together. Kitty sure didn’t.

“You’re welcome”, she replied gently. Fishing around for a topic, she asked, “So, what made you want to get into law?”

“I just kinda… discovered it one day, and realized that it was something I felt strongly about, and could actually use to make a difference. See, I wanna become a prosecutor one day, back in Gotham. I dunno if you know anything about it, but the place is a human cesspool. I think the crime’s worse there than anywhere else in the country.” he said, realizing he’d been talking an awful lot. “So, how about you? Did you always know you wanted to go into computer science?” he asked.

Kitty followed Harvey’s lead and took a sip of her beer, resisting the urge to gag. She’d never understood why people liked to drink it, it tasted terrible. But some things grow on you, she guessed.

“Yeah, it’s nice, thanks,” she replied, smiling back at him. God, she was smiling a lot. He probably thought she was some sort of lunatic. Kitty had to laugh at Harvey’s self-deprecation. “I don’t know you very well, but something tells me that nothing about Harvey Dent is average”, she asserted.

Harvey looked down and smiled; she actually made him blush with that. He was complimented on his looks plenty of times, but his mind and personality often went unnoticed, and even insulted, when he was still living with his father. “Thanks. I don’t really get that a lot.” he admitted, though he was a little embarrassed to say so.

“I’m sure”, she smiled, touched at his offer. “And I agree, although the Star Trek remakes have Chris Pine…”

Kitty blushed, remembering where she was and who she was talking to. Obviously a guy like Harvey didn’t go to see movies just because some hot guy was in them. “But the new Twilight Zone has nothing on the old one!” she remarked hastily, trying to change the subject. “I love Rod Serling!”

Kitty tried to get comfortable in Harvey’s desk chair, knowing he was only a few inches away from her. Hopefully this wouldn’t be too awkward…

“Oh! It’s, um, computer science. I think I might add a language minor at some point. What about you?” she asked, congratulating herself on sounding semi-normal.

“Yeah? I don’t think Chris Pine really compares to Shatner. I mean, he’s a better actor, but he’s not as good-looking as he was. Now, Zachary Quinto, he’s hot.” he said with a grin. Harvey wasn’t gay, but he wasn’t exactly straight, either. There weren’t a lot of people out there that he wasn’t willing to date and/or sleep with.

“That’s definitely true. Rod Serling was great. Probably one of the greatest people who ever lived.” he said, noting her embarrassment. It was kind of cute, but he did his best to put her at ease.

“Wow, you must be pretty smart, huh? I’m just a political science major; I’m gonna go to law school after this, with any luck.”

Kitty blinked in surprise. “Well, yeah, totally! Young William Shatner was haaandsome. ZQ is pretty good-looking too,” she admitted. It was nice to be able to talk guys with a…guy.

“Yeah, he was a real gentleman. I wish we had more men like that these days,” she sighed. Although this Harvey Dent might just fit the bill…No! Stop thinking like that. You barely know the guy.

Aww, thanks,” she blushed. “It just comes easily to me, I don’t know why. And psshh, poli sci and law school? You must be pretty smart yourself,” Kitty teased.

“Yeah, I mean, he’s not traditionally handsome. He’s got an interesting face.” he said. He was trying to be more open about his sexuality, even though it felt a little weird. Luckily for him, she didn’t seem to mind.

“Well, I think it’s really just a matter of finding the right guy. There’s just a lot less of ‘em nowadays.” he said, taking a drink of his beer. He’d forgotten he was holding it, having gotten rather caught up in their conversation.

“Some people are just gifted like that, I guess. It’s great that you can do something you’re good at and that you like.” he smiled. “Nah, I’m average, I guess.” he said, finding it hard to accept the compliment. He was pretty insecure about his intelligence, among other things.

Kitty smiled in relief. Harvey seemed nice and so far she hadn’t made a fool of herself. She accepted a beer from him nervously, thinking to herself: Be cool, be cool. Kitty had been telling the truth when she said that she’d hadn’t done much drinking before - in high school, she’d always been the good kid. But now she wanted to have the “real” college experience, drinking and all.

“No, I walked over,” she reassured him. Kitty wouldn’t have been stupid enough to drink and drive, and besides, she didn’t have a car at school anyway.

She took a seat on his chair. The bed felt too personal.

“Oh, it’s fine, I ate before I came,” she protested. Kitty didn’t want Harvey to go to too much trouble for her. She always felt awkward when other people did nice things for her.

“And anything’s good with me, as long as it’s the original,” she grinned. Kitty had grown up watching all the old 60s sci-fi shows with her dad, so it felt like coming home again to see them now.

“You sure? I’ve got five bucks and I’m feeling ritzy.” he said with a grin. “That’s fine, though, I should probably use it for something else, anyway.” he said.

“Great! Nothing against the remakes and spin-offs, but nothing’s as good as the original. Same goes for most everything.” he said while he popped in a Twilight Zone DVD. He’d been re-watching the series in his free time, anyway, so it seemed like a good choice.

“So, I don’t think I ever asked what your major is.” he said, trying to get to know her a little better so they wouldn’t just be sitting there awkwardly staring at the screen.

“I’m sure”, she smiled, touched at his offer. “And I agree, although the Star Trek remakes have Chris Pine…”

Kitty knocked on the door apprehensively. She could count on one hand the number of times she’d been alone in a room with a boy, let alone a handsome one. She still felt awkward talking to boys, but she figured that they’d find something to talk about, since they both liked Star Trek and all.

The door was open, so Kitty slowly turned the handle and opened it. She stuck her head in looking around for Harvey and smiled when she spotted him. “Hey!” she exclaimed cheerfully, and walked over to him. “I’m Kitty.” She extended her hand, hoping she didn’t seem overeager or dorky.

“Hey, there! I’m Harvey.” he said, shaking her hand. “You didn’t drive here, did you?” he asked, passing her a beer. Harvey was a big advocate for drinking responsibly; it was just stupid to not adhere to those laws. Underage drinking was another thing; if you’re eighteen, then you should be able to have a couple drinks.

“C’mon, have a seat.” he said, gesturing to the only two seats in the room, his desk chair and his bed. “You hungry? I can order a pizza or something…” he said, looking through his wallet. He was a little nervous meeting new people, but he did his best to break the ice with boring small-talk.

“Alright, so, the only series I’ve got are Star Trek, The Twilight Zone, and The Outer Limits, all the originals. You have a preference?” he asked.

Kitty smiled in relief. Harvey seemed nice and so far she hadn’t made a fool of herself. She accepted a beer from him nervously, thinking to herself: Be cool, be cool. Pulling on a clean t-shirt, Harvey went to unlock his door for when Kitty showed up. He actually bothered to pick up some, though there were still plenty of papers and books lying around. This Kitty girl seemed pretty nice, not to mention she was a sci-fi fan, and a pretty one, at that. She seemed a little young, but it was really just her face. She had one of those cute baby faces that she’d probably never grow out of.
